Floraphonics

Floraphonics transforms the subtle bioelectrical rhythms of plants into musical narratives using the innovative PlantWave device, which converts nature’s hidden pulse into evocative MIDI data. As a progressive jazz bass player with over 30 albums released on my record label Mr. Haircut, I record plants while adventuring around the world and craft my studio tracks with vintage analog synthesizers—Floraphonics is my latest creative project.

Embark on an adventure into the wild heart of Puerto Rico, where I set out to capture the rare song of the critically endangered Elaphoglossum Serpens fern. Once a common sight on the island’s 4000-foot peaks, these small, fragile ferns now cling to life on the solitary mountaintop of Cerra Punta—with only 26 specimens remaining. As I trekked beneath the rainforest canopy, I marveled at the fern’s resilience amid a landscape reshaped by cell towers, yet felt a deep sorrow for an ecosystem that has almost been wiped from the Earth. This track is not just an ode to adventure and nature’s delicate beauty—it’s a call to conservation. Plants like this fern go extinct everyday, unnoticed. Maybe by giving them a voice, people like you will pay attention and speak up as an advocate for our fragile ecosystem.
